Our Award Winning Accessible Aerial Classes

March 2025

Aerial | Wellbeing | Accessibility | Circus | All

As I’m sure you are aware, our accessible aerial classes recently won Club of the Month award, presented by Every Body Moves and ParalympicsGB! They came in and filmed a feature on our class and wonderful community which you can watch below:

Flying Fantastic, from its very beginnings, was built on the principles of Inclusivity, Accessibility and Community, so to be recognised for our accessible class really is special to us. The classes began in 2023 after a 10 week accessible aerial programme in collaboration with extraordinary bodies and funded by Sispan and Access Sport. You can read more about that programme from the participants themselves HERE.

Viewing disability through the social model shows us that people are not disabled by their impairments or differences, but by the barriers created by society. In our accessible classes and workshops we have the equipment at a lower height, classes are slower paced and we take into consideration the individuals strengths to design lessons that enable them to move freely, fly and most importantly, have fun! If you have heard of our classes, you probably know of Meg, one of our first adaptive participants, who put it beautifully: "We have all different kinds of people with disabilities come to the class and it never ceases to amaze me what the instructors come up with. They never really say no to anyone. They're like, okay, we'll find a way."

This award doesn’t just recognise the class, but the community that has come with it. An aim of Flying Fantastic has always been to create an inclusive, non-judgemental and welcoming space for people to enjoy aerial in whichever form they choose, whether you are here to get fit, move for your mental health, or to become a professional. We foster this mentality in all of our classes, but our accessible class provides a space for anyone who finds our mainstream classes daunting, offering a supportive environment where everyone can feel comfortable at their own pace. It's about removing barriers and creating a space where progress is celebrated, no matter how big or small. This class is designed to help build confidence, strength, and connection with both yourself and others in a way that feels safe and encouraging. Our community is what makes Flying Fantastic truly special, and this award is a testament to the effort we put into creating a space where everyone belongs.

Alex, who has been flying with us for 8 months now says "It's a space where everybody's welcome... I've never been in a space which is so inclusive and I'm able to be myself and I don't have to worry about my disability getting in the way. It (finding the club) meant everything."
Every Body Moves have created a wonderful platform for accessible sports groups across the nation and we cannot recommend them more to both list and find opportunities from wheelchair rugby, to accessible Taekwondo.
Our next Accessible Aerial Workshop is now live to book HERE (as well as being listed with the wonderful EBM website) and runs on Sunday 6th April out of our Peckham studio.
If you are interested in joining us for our classes or workshops for yourself or someone you think would enjoy aerial, please do email me at molly@flyingfantastic.co.uk to introduce yourself so we can make sure we run the best possible session for you! We’ll see you soon!
