Do you feel like silks or rope make no sense to you? Not that you can’t do the sequences, no no, you absolutely can get from Figure A to Figure B to Figure C – but you don’t know how you got from Figure A to B to C? What magic made the rope/silk land in that perfect place when you transitioned from one to the other?
Well, if you are like me and have been aching to unlock the secrets of this magic, the Verticals Intensive is for you. My biggest win wasn’t the new tricks I learned (though that slow and smooth Melty Star deserves a shoutout) but how much more secure I am in my verticals knowledge. I now understand how moves link into one another and how I can now build my own sequences because I spent a week with two wonderful experts who took their time to make sure we got the theory behind the skills, rather than merely trying to mimic them.

Spoiler alert: it’s intense. You’ll tell me “Well of course, it’s not called an intensive for nothing!” but not only is it physically challenging (blessed dunking of hands in an ice bath on Day 3), I found it challenging mentally – because you learn so much. In classes or when training, I am used to drilling a skill over and over and over until I get it or get close to it. Forget that, that’s not the point of the intensive. The instructors will fire an incredible number of skills at you in a very short amount of time (it’s only a week!), so you can go away at the end of the week with your horizons expanded and do the drilling in your own time.
Now, it can sound quite daunting, maybe a little scary. Blast that! Everyone, from the teachers to the participants, bring a lovely energy into the room and your screaming muscles will be drowned by the cheers of everyone rooting for you – whether or not you succeed in the skill! I spent the entire week with a smile on my face, whether it was because I was just shown a super cool trick, tried a super cool trick or saw someone achieve a super cool trick.

So if you’re looking to finetune your verticals skills, get enough training material for the next 3 months, learn from incredibly talented people and meet some equally talented and lovely fellow aerialist, you know what to do next! (That’s keeping an eye out on the Flying Fantastic socials for the next Verticals Intensive)
