Frequently Asked Questions

We're sure there are lots of things you might need to know, so here is a list of our most frequently asked questions. If the answer to your question isn't here, please feel free to drop us a line and we'll do all we can. Please contact us.

I've never done anything like this before – is this really for me?

Everyone's a beginner at some point! We'd recommend coming down and giving it a go! Most Flying Fantastic classes are open to people of all levels and no experience is necessary. (We promise!)

How much do the classes cost?

Class prices vary according to the discipline, but all prices are shown on our booking page. Aerial silks classes cost £18 for a full on 90 minute workout! If purchases using credits, the cost comes down significantly.
Our courses are calculated on the same price per class, and are also available to book using credits.

When are the classes?

All Flying Fantastic's classes can be found on the timetable page. For info on availability of specific classes, please check the bookings page.

Will this REALLY get me fit?

Yes. Absolutely. Performing strengthening exercises while inverted is one of the most effective ways of building strength. If you incorporate aerial fitness into your regular work-out programme you'll see and feel the benefits in no time. For more, check out the Fitness benefits section on the Classes page.

In a recent test, one of our customers burnt as many calories in an Aerial Silks class as they usually do in an hour long Spinning class at the gym.

Is it safe?

This is a question we get asked a lot. As long as you do what you're told, you'll be looked after, and will be perfectly safe. You'll be perfecting all the moves at ground level before you're allowed to do anything up high. With proper equipment, training and supervision, aerial arts are as safe as any other recreational sport or rigorous physical activity you may engage in. (Needless to say, we have crash mats beneath all apparatus just in case!)

It looks hard... do you have to be strong?

Aerial fitness IS hard. But give it time and you'll get there. Within a few weeks you'll develop strength and muscles you never knew you had!

What should I wear to a class?

Try to avoid loose fitting clothing. Cover your arms, you knees and your midriff. Cotton fabrics are more compatible with silks than shiny lycra. Jewellery and watches cannot be worn. Long hair should be tied back.

Silks is generally done in bare feet as this gives you the best grip.
(Thin ballet pump type shoes can also be worn)

How many people are in a class?

The class sizes vary. Battersea drop in classes will generally be between 15 and 18 people. While the classes in Farringdon will generally be smaller. Maximum class sizes can be found on the bookings page. We always make sure there are sufficient teachers to give everyone the attention and guidance they need, and that there is ample equipment to go round.

Do I need a Paypal account to book?

No, you don't need a PayPal account. We have 2 payment methods available. Our payment gateway - Cardsave - accepts most credit / debit cards. Just follow the normal booking procedure. Alternatively, there is an option to use Paypal. Even if you don't have an account, there's an option to pay using credit or debit cards without you having to set up an account.

What is the age/height/weight limit?

Anyone 16 years and over is welcome at our classes and there are no height limitations. Unfortunately due to building restrictions, our classes are not suitable for people above 85kg.

Do you have classes for different levels of ability?

We run a variety of classes. Most are suitable for people of all levels of ability. A few are specifically aimed at students with a little more experience. But all class levels are clearly displayed on the booking page.  Please contact us if you have any questions.

I’ve not got a head for heights – is this a problem?

There's no hiding from it – Aerial silks does involve doing some activity in the air... but how high you go is entirely up to you. You'll have a chance to acclimatise yourself before doing anything at height. A common outcome of aerial training is gained confidence working at height.

Where are the classes and what’s the best way to get there?

We have 2 venue - Battersea and Farringdon. For the best way to get to either venue we suggest checking TFL's journey planner, entering the following details for the best results.

For Gymbox Farringdon: 20 Farringdon Road
For the Wilditch Centre Battersea: SW11 5BB

Is there parking available at the site?

Farringdon: Parking around Farringdon is limited. Gymbox is right next to the tube station, so we would suggest using public transport to get here.

Battersea: There are some roads very near the Wilditch Centre with no parking restrictions at all. After 7pm there is free parking in the roads immediately around The Wilditch Centre. But please check the signs for more info.

How long do the classes go on for?

Classes typically run for between 75 mins and 90 mins. But class length may vary. Check the individual class timetable for more details.

Am I allowed to bring food and drink to the classes?

Classes can be very tiring, so some water or energy snacks can be a good idea. But please keep all foodstuffs well away from the training area. No-one wants to climb sticky silks...

Is there anywhere I can change?

Battersea: The Wilditch Centre does have spacious toilet facilities and other rooms where you can get changed. There are no dedicated changing rooms.

Farringdon: Gymbox Farringdon is kitted out with state of the art changing rooms with everything you'll ever need. But you will need to bring a combination padlock if you want to leave your stuff in the lockers.

Can I just come and watch?

Of course. Visitors are welcome to Flying Fantastic as long as they do not disrupt the class and keep out of the way of the lesson. But if you really want to see what it's all about, we'd really recommend giving it a go for yourself!

I've got some persistent injuries - is this a problem?

If you've got injuries to your back, neck, shoulders or wrists, aerial activities are probably not a good idea. If you're not sure, please contact us and we'll advise you as best as we can. Aerial activities are not suitable for people suffering from glaucoma.

Do you offer kids classes?

Currently we do not offer any classes for kids. But we are developing a programme for our younger flyers to let them get in on the act too. If you're interested in these, please drop us a note via the contact form and we'll let you know as and when it's up and running.
